Saturday Night Live UK gets green light for second series

Saturday Night Live UK has received the green light for a second series, according to Sky.

The British incarnation of the NBC sketch comedy show will return for 12 more episodes following its premiere in March.

The streamer confirmed the show will return for a second series with nearly twice as many episodes as its debut, which began with six and later extended to eight episodes, and will air between September 2026 and early 2027.

Saturday Night Live (SNL) creator and executive producer, Lorne Michaels, said: “I’m incredibly proud of our team and the show.

“It keeps getting better every week. I’m grateful to Dana Strong and Sky for believing in and supporting SNL UK. I’m excited for the season ahead.”

Broadcast live from London, each episode lasts 75 minutes and sees a different host take to the stage each week alongside the show’s inaugural cast and with a performance from a musical guest.

The series debuted with SNL veteran Tina Fey, who was followed by The Fall actor Jamie Dornan, Bait star Riz Ahmed, comedian Jack Whitehall, Derry Girls actress Nicola Coughlan and Sex Education star Aimee Lou Wood.

The remaining two episodes will be fronted by Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham, who will host the show on May 9 with musical guest Myles Smith, followed by Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa on May 16 with musical guest Holly Humberstone.

Phil Edgar Jones, executive director of unscripted originals at Sky, said: “It’s fair to say people doubted SNL would work in the UK, but thanks to Lorne Michaels, his longtime Saturday Night Live producing team and UTAS UK, alongside our brilliant cast and writers, SNL UK is Sky’s most-talked-about show of the year.

“It’s now firmly part of the cultural conversation and we’re thrilled the show will be returning in the autumn, bringing laughter and mischief to our audiences, live from London on a Saturday night!”

Some of the notable moments from the first series include cast member Jack Shep’s portrayal of Diana, Princess of Wales and George Fouracres’ sketches of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

The SNL UK cast also includes Hammed Animashaun, Ayoade Bamgboye, Larry Dean, Celeste Dring, Ania Magliano, Annabel Marlow, Al Nash, Emma Sidi and Paddy Young.

Saturday Night Live UK will return on Saturday at 10pm on Sky One and streaming service NOW.
