A Saturday Night Live skit portraying Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson has come under fire ahead of tonight's Oscars ceremony.

The pre-Oscars episode of the American show has been slammed for its "offensive" jokes about Ireland. The sketch comes as Ireland is up for a whopping 14 awards in this year's Oscars with nominations for The Banshees of Inisherin, An Cailín Ciúin, and An Irish Goodbye making it one of the best years for the Irish film industry.

A short skit from SNL had two actors posing as Farrell and Gleeson did an interview with the hosts while speaking in what sounded like gibberish. The punchline to the joke was that the pair "hadn't started drinking yet".

A third person said: "Even if I try to ignore the outdated & offensive stereotyping, the bit is still painfully unfunny. Like 'reassess your career choices' levels of unfunny."
