Federation-era Hal Eyre was a journalist, cartoonist and illustrator. During World War I, he satirised themes of national identity, political power plays and the disintegration of the great European powers, with his cartoons becoming much sought after.
Over the course of his career, Eyre worked at Brisbane’s Queenslander and the Daily Mail, and Sydney’s Daily Telegraph. The exhibition Satire in the Time of War: Cartoons of Hal Eyre showcases 20 of his most amusing cartoons, created between 1914 and 1918.
