SAS: Who Dares Wins 'utterly terrifying' new star proves a hit with 'petrified' viewers

Melvyn Downes is already a hit with viewers of the new series of SAS: Who Dares Wins.

As the notoriously brutal series' new DS - Directing Staff - Melvyn is a newcomer for series six and a veteran of the Iraq War and a career in the Special Forces across three decades.

12 of these years have involved carrying out missions as part of the SAS.

Early on he made sure the new recruits new who was boss as he screamed at them with their faces down in wet mud.

"Get a move on, move it!" he yelled, kicking mud at the hopefuls.

But he also displayed a fairness of mind, determining to motivate recruit Holly after she told him and Ant Middleton about the her struggles since childhood.

And Melvyn is proving a hit with viewers - who've admitted they're quaking on their sofas when he shouts.

"I would NOT want to upset Melvyn #SASWhoDaresWins," one tweeted.

A third remarked: "2 mins in and enjoying Melvyn Downes!"

"5 minutes in and I already love Melvyn!" another agreed.

"Melvyn ain't playing around," one observed.

"Melvyn looks well ard...." another tweeted, "I would be like thanks byyyeeeeee."

Melvyn recently opened up about his new role, telling The Sun : "I know people are going to say it's all about race, but I don't see it that way.

Ant detailed Melvyn's military career (Channel 4)

"I had 24 years in the British military, got to senior rank as a Warrant Officer and led countless SAS operations, I think I have got the necessary experience first of all to back it up."

He added: "Being the first mixed-race DS is going to be a great opportunity as I can represent the under-represented in life — not just minorities, I'm talking about people from deprived, working-class backgrounds."
