SAS soldier shoots pal with live ammo instead of paintball in mock invasion blunder

A crack SAS trooper shot a comrade by mistake during a training exercise.

The soldier was supposed to be firing training ammunition similar to paintball “bullets”.

But the gun was loaded with live rounds and he shot a fellow SAS soldier in the arm.

The victim, whose chest was protected by body armour, was taken to hospital and is still recovering about 12
weeks later.

The gaffe happened at intelligence agency GCHQ in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

Two SAS teams took part in the operation, with one playing an attacking force that took spies hostage and the other trying to rescue the staff.

A source said: “It’s military dark humour but it was shrugged off in a way. It’s one of those things that very
occasionally happens.”

The news comes as experts from around the world gather in Glasgow’s SEC today for a conference on the threat of cyber attacks from international terrorists, rogue states and organised criminals.

The Ministry of Defence declined to comment on the special forces incident.
