Sarwar backs impact of Labour's coalition councillors

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has insisted his party's councillors have delivered as part of a coalition with the SNP and independents.

Despite an historically low return of just five councillors at the last local elections in 2017, the party has had the opportunity to influence policy through the pact.

Mr Sarwar said: “What this shows is that, where Labour councillors are empowered and have the opportunity, they can deliver for their local communities.

“The lesson for the Scottish Government is to make sure we are not decimating local government budgets, but rather recognise the role of local government, invest in local communities rather than hoard power and resources at Holyrood and push power and resources to our local authorities.”

He also had time to acknowledge the difficult position Labour faces here in Ayrshire and beyond.

He said: "“I recognise that the Labour Party has a huge job of work to do, to rebuild its position of trust with the people of Scotland.

"I hope people can see that I am leading with positivity, with energy and enthusiasm, because I want to get back to the politics of hope and the politics of unity again.

“We’ve had enough of having politicians trying to divide our communities. I want to bring our communities to make a fairer and more equal society.”
