The Justice Ministry in the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) announced on Saturday the release of former Prime Minister al-Baghdadi Ali al-Mahmoudi.

Mahmoudi, who served during the final five years of late leader Moammar al-Gaddafi’s rule, was released for medical reasons and will receive the necessary treatment abroad.

The authorities in Libya were no longer able to provide effective treatment. He needed the care of international specialists, said a Justice Ministry statement.

It gave no information about the nature of his ailment.

The justice minister said that Mahmoudi's release came out of "compassionate considerations and human mercy."

Mahmoudi was extradited by Tunisian authorities in 2012 to Libya’s interim government for crimes against the Libyan people during the 2011 uprising that toppled Gaddafi.

He was sentenced to death in 2015 along with other senior officials.
