Sarah Silverman addresses backlash after savage jibes about Britney Spears

Sarah Silverman has responded to backlash after an old clip of her making jokes about Britney Spears surfaced online.

In 2007, the 50-year-old comedy star made several crass jokes about the pop princess while on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards.

During the awkward clip, Sarah jokes that Britney had already achieved everything in her life and dubbed Britney's children "adorable mistakes."

In the clip, Sarah said: "25 years old and she's accomplished everything she’s ever going to accomplish in her life.'

"It’s weird to think that just a few years ago on this very show she was this, like, sweet, innocent, little girl in slutty clothes riding around with a python," Sarah continued.

The television star then made a reference to Britney's vagina and joked about her children while the crowd laughed.

Prior to Sarah's roasts, Britney had taken to stage in what has become quite a memorable performance.

The songstress - who had famously shaved her head months earlier - was torn into at the time as she poorly mimed the lyrics to Gimme More.

Over the past weekend, Sarah was forced to defend herself after the clip faced criticism on Twitter over 13 years on.

"I was known then 4 roasts. MTV asked me to mini-roast Britney after her big performance," Sarah said on social media.

"While she was performing I was having diarrhea & going over my jokes. Had no idea she didn’t kill. Unfortunate. Art changes over yrs as we know more & the world changes.

In a second tweet, she added: "I wish I could delete it but I can’t. But you are posting it for people to see. So r u trying to be kind or right?

Several social media followers weren't pleased with Sarah's response, pointing out that she didn't actually say 'sorry'.
