Sarah Sanders has told a religious television network that God wanted Donald Trump to be president.

The White House press secretary made the claim in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN).

She said God was the reason Mr Trump was in office, adding that it was "very hard" to take morality lessons from the Democrats.

"I think God calls all of us to fill different roles at different times and I think that he wanted Donald Trump to become president, and that's why he's there," Sanders told CBN.

"I think he has done a tremendous job in supporting a lot of the things that people of faith really care about.”

During the interview, Sanders also hit out at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over her remarks that building a wall on the US-Mexico border would be “immoral”.

“Honestly, it's very hard at this point to even take a lecture from Democrats on what is moral and what isn't,” she said.
