Schoolgirl Sarah Payne’s killer has been attacked and stabbed in his cell at a top security prison.

Convicted paedophile Roy Whiting, 59, abducted and murdered Sarah in West Sussex in 2000 and is serving a life sentence with a minimum of 40 years.

Whiting was taken to hospital after being stabbed by two inmates with makeshift blades at HMP Wakefield on Thursday.

A Prison Service spokesman said: "A prisoner at HMP Wakefield was attacked on Thursday evening and received hospital treatment.

"The prisoner is back in prison in a stable condition and the incident is being investigated by police."

Sarah, who lived in Hersham Surrey, disappeared from her grandparents’ home in Kingston Gorse, West Sussex in July 2000 sparking a huge police investigation.

She had been playing with her brothers and sisters before slipping through a hedge onto a country lane and was not seen again. Her body was found 15 miles away more than two weeks later. She had been brutally murdered.

It is not the first time Whiting has been attacked by fellow inmates in prison. In July 2011, he was stabbed in the eye with a sharpened toilet brush and in 2002, he was slashed with a razor blade.
