Sarah Jessica Parker has addressed speculation over Kim Cattrall’s absence from the forthcoming Sex and the City reboot, declaring, “I don’t dislike her”.
On Sunday (10 January), the show’s stars Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis all confirmed their participation in a revival of the series titled Sex and the City: And Just Like That… The 10-part limited series will see the trio reprise their roles as Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte, respectively.
Cattrall, who quit the role of Samantha in 2017 and publicly hit out at Parker in 2018, will not take part in the series.
On Instagram, Parker confirmed Cattrall’s absence from the revival, but also clarified the current status of her relationship with the actor.
After a commenter noticed that Parker did not “tag” Cattrall in her announcement of the reboot on Instagram, as Cattrall isn’t appearing in it, another commenter wrote: “They dislike each other”. Parker then replied to the user, writing: “No. I don’t dislike her. I’ve never said that. Never would.”
Parker continued: “Samantha isn’t part of this story. But she will always be part of us. No matter where we are or what we do.”
Also on Instagram, Parker responded to another fan who expressed excitement about the revival, but confessed that she will “miss Kim/Samantha”.
“We will too,” Parker replied. “We loved her so.”
Sex and the City revolves around the romantic and professional entanglements of four Manhattan women. The beloved original series ran for six seasons, before being followed up by two big-screen movies.
Cattrall has long distanced herself from the role of Samantha, declaring in 2017 that she had moved on from the character. She also said that Parker “could have been nicer” about her refusal to take part in a third Sex and the City movie.
Cattrall went further in February 2018, following the death of her brother Chris. After Parker wrote a comment of condolence on Cattrall’s Instagram, Cattrall called her “cruel” and posted a photo of a message that read: “I don’t need your love or support at this tragic time @sarahjessicaparker.”
Sex and the City: And Just Like That… will reportedly begin filming in the spring, and will debut on the new US streaming service HBO Max. A UK broadcaster has yet to be announced.
