Sarah Harding's gruelling weekly chemotherapy sessions as she confirms cancer has spread

Girls Aloud star Sarah Harding has revealed that she is undergoing gruelling chemotherapy on weekly basis.

The pop singer, who found fame on Popstars: The Rivals in 2002 alongside Cheryl, Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh, shared the tragic news that she is battling cancer on Twitter on Wednesday.

In the heartbreaking post, she explained that she was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year and in recent weeks she was alerted by medical professionals that the disease has spread throughout her body.

The Love Machine hitmaker explained that in a bid to try and 'fight as hard as she can' she is having chemotherapy every week.

Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to destroy cancer cells and it works by keeping the cancer cells from growing and multiplying.

The treatment is gruelling on the body and patients undergoing chemotherapy can suffer side affects such as hair loss, fatigue, nausea, changes in appetite, infection and anemia.

Sarah bravely shared in her statement online: "Hi everyone, I hope you are all keeping safe and well during these uncertain times. I’ve not posted on here for so long, thank you to everyone who has reached out to check in on me, it really does mean a lot. I feel now is the right time to share what’s been going on.

Sharing a picture of herself in hospital, she wrote: "Hi everyone, I hope you are all keeping safe and well during these uncertain times. I’ve not posted on here for so long, thank you to everyone who has reached out to check in on me, it really does mean a lot. I feel now is the right time to share what’s been going on.

"My amazing mum, family and close friends are helping me through this, and I want to say a thank you to the wonderful NHS doctors and nurses who have been and continue to be heroes. I am doing my very best to keep positive and will keep you updated here with how I’m getting on.

"In the meantime I hope you’ll all understand and respect my request for privacy during this difficult time. Sending you all so much love….xx"

Alongside the message she uploaded a photo of herself in hospital.

Back in March, it was reported that Sarah had gone into hiding and was stepping back from the spotlight following her years of fame in the band, as an actress and following her much-discussed appearance on Celebrity Big Brother.

Sarah was last seen in public at the National Film Awards in London in March 2018.

As well as ducking out of private events, Sarah also stopped posting on her social media accounts.

Before today, she last shared a picture on Instagram in May 2018.

Her official website was also taken offline.
