Sarah Harding's ex Chad Johnson says she 'really missed her Girls Aloud sisters'

By Louise Randell

Sarah Harding's ex-boyfriend Chad Johnson has insisted she "really missed" her Girls Aloud bandmates over the years and was fiercely proud of all their achievements.

The singer died on Sunday aged 39 after a battle with breast cancer, sending the showbiz world into mourning.

Now her former partner Chad, 34, has spoken about their time together and revealed Sarah would often reminisce about her time in the girl group.

She rose to fame in the band with Cheryl, Kimberley Walsh, Nicola Roberts and Nadine Coyle after being placed together on reality TV show Popstars: the Rivals, but they had drifted apart in recent years following the bands's split.

Chad, who met Sarah during their stint on Celebrity Big Brother in 2017, has now insisted she "really missed" her pals as they were like "sisters" to her.

He told The Sun : "I think Sarah really missed the girls. They were like her sisters. They were family. There had been squabbles between a few of them and Sarah would talk about it.

"But I could read through it. I said to her, 'You just miss them.' Yes to her it sounded like some of the girls were saying things about the others but I knew that she just missed them."

Chad went on to reveal Sarah would often show him clips from Popstars and of her time in the band so he could understand her past career.

He also said she was immensely proud of the band's award-winning track The Promise because she had a big solo part in the song.

The sad news of Sarah's death was broken by her mum on Instagram on Sunday.

She wrote: “It’s with deep heartbreak that today I’m sharing the news that my beautiful daughter Sarah has sadly passed away.

"Many of you will know of Sarah’s battle with cancer and that she fought so strongly from her diagnosis until her last day.

"She slipped away peacefully this morning. I’d like to thank everyone for their kind support over the past year.

"It meant the world to Sarah and it gave her great strength and comfort to know she was loved.

"I know she won’t want to be remembered for her fight against this terrible disease – she was a bright shining star and I hope that’s how she can be remembered instead.”

Brave Sarah had undergone gruelling treatment to beat the cancer, including a mastectomy and intensive chemotherapy since first being diagnosed in summer 2020.

But in March this year she revealed the devastating news that the cancer had spread to her spine and she knew she was dying.

Since her passing, tributes have poured in from all her famous friends and fans including her Girls Aloud bandmates.

Cheryl shared a post on Instagram, writing: "Although we knew this day would arrive I am somehow still feeling at a loss for words that our stunning, unique, crazy, quirky, kind and soft hearted girl has departed.

"As I try to navigate my way through these painfully strange and horribly unfamiliar waves of disbelief & finality I am experiencing, I wanted to extend my condolences to all of our GA fans.

"We were like an extended family for so long and we know so many of you by name. I wanted to make sure you knew just how much your love and continued support meant to Sarah through her most vulnerable times.

"She was so grateful and you really lifted her spirits when she needed you most. I also realise so many will be deeply affected by the circumstances of Sarah’s passing… I am sending you all so much love. I love you Sarah… farewell.

"Sarah Nicole Harding forever in our hearts."

Nadine Coyle added: "I am absolutely devastated!! I can’t think of words that could possibly express how I feel about this girl & what she means to me!! I know so many of you will be feeling this way. For now I’m sending so much love to you!!!!"

She ended her message with a single red heart emoji.
