Sarah Ferguson buys luxury £5m house - 12 years after 'financial struggle'

The Duchess of York has allegedly bought a £5million luxury home in Mayfair, one of London's most exclusive districts.

Sarah Ferguson, 62, is said to have purchased the home from her close friend, the Duke of Westminster, who is one of Britain's richest men.

The home is said to be an investment opportunity for Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie - but has sparked interest amid previous complaints about her financial difficulties.

The home - previously two flats - has been converted back to a house and is her only home in London.

But Fergie spends most of her time in the UK living with her ex-husband Prince Andrew at the Royal Lodge in Windsor.

Fergie famously previously described herself as 'continually on the verge of financial bankruptcy' in a 2010 TV interview in the US, and also admitted to having 'little understanding' of money.

Fergie is still very close to Andrew and despite being divorced, she still stays with him at his home on the Windsor estate.

Sarah once told the Daily Mail: "We're the happiest divorced couple in the world. We're divorced to each other, not from each other."

She previously denied living full time with her ex-husband at Royal Lodge in Windsor, telling Times Radio that she is often out of the country.

She said: "I spend so much time out of the country, doing my philanthropic work, that when I do come back in, I'm very lucky to be able to stay here. It would be very wrong.

"If I said it was my home. It's a place where we are a united front with the girls. It's their home. And now my grandchildren come here and I have always believed in communication, compromise and compassion.

"I have always believed it. I have great faith."

Fergie's representatives confirmed the purchase to the Sun but did not confirm how much the property cost.

Sources told the Sun the new Mayfair property is 'a long-term investment for daughters Princess Beatrice and Eugenie', describing it as 'picturesque' and in 'one of the very smartest areas of London.'

They told the paper: 'It had previously been a couple of flats but has been converted to a single property.

'If the girls are going to inherit it at some stage they're extremely lucky.

'It's a short walk from the best bars and restaurants in the city, beautiful parks and other hot spots. But God knows where the money has come from — everyone thought they were totally skint.'
