The lip-synching comedian and viral star Sarah Cooper made an appearance at the DNC and did what she does best – poked fun at Donald Trump.
On a night when comedy at times mixed uneasily with the sombre tone of the final night of the convention as a result of the lengthy tributes paid to Joe Biden’s late son, Beau, who died from a rare cancer in 2015, Cooper managed to find the perfect words.
That was probably because, as is her way, they were not hers, but those of the president, around which she has developed a massive following for lip-synching along to.
The look on her face – puzzled, startled and bewildered – somehow matches perfectly the strange and seemingly unnatural direction of much of the president’s diction.
On Thursday she picked on the topic of mail-in ballots, against which the president has campaigned, having admitted that allowing everyone to vote in this manner could harm the chances of Republicans.
Having completed her routine, Cooper got suddenly serious.
“I have heard Donald Trump say some pretty unhinged things. I have heard them over and over and over again. But nothing is more dangerous to our democracy than his attacks on mail-in voting during a pandemic,” she said.
“Whether you plan to vote by mail or in person wearing your mask, it is your vote and it’s your right. Don’t let Donald Trump take that away from you.”
