The success of Sarah Brown's surprise appearance on stage at the Labour party conference yesterday was not lost on the prime minister.

As she dutifully stood at his side at a reception last night, Gordon Brown joked: "I do of course realise that I'm going to be the person who gives the vote of thanks after Sarah speaks."
