Sarah Beeny: which TV interiors are streets ahead?
The Tudors: The clothes were rich and engaging at the time and so were the interiors. Before central heating, people wore layers of thick clothing to keep themselves warm and insulated their rooms in the same way – draping their homes in tapestries and great swathes of fabric. The picture, lamp and wallpaper are all focal features, so together they fight a bit for attention – it's much better to have less focal features so they can stand out, without conflictPhotograph: ITVFrasier: In a big space bold items can work well, but this many statement pieces in one room is exhausting to look at. A big tick for the comfy chair, it's really important to remember that homes are first and foremost for living in and comfort is essentialPhotograph: NBCUPhotobank/Rex Features
Marchlands: If you have a passion for a certain period then go for it but don’t be a slave to it. Take best of the old and use it in a way that works for the way you live today. There are a lot of great period pieces from the 70s and 80s that are not in this room – if you love the retro look, go further and really engage in the periodPhotograph: ITVThe Royle Family: Clear your clutter. Clutter adds stress to daily life, good storage is essential. Getting toys packed away at the end of the day helps you to clear your head and enjoy adult time. If you are going to use decorative borders to punctuate two different wallpapers, they need to be in proportionPhotograph: BBCFriends: I personally love the Friends decor because it feels warm and inviting. It reminds me of being young and my first home; of when you don't have any money and you collect your furniture, crockery and decorative bits and bobs from all over the place.
