Saracens begin Champions Cup defence without big-hitters to focus on Premiership survival

Saracens begin the defence of their Champions Cup title in Paris on Sunday without all their superstars.

The Londoners, reeling from a 35-point penalty handed to them for breaching the salary cap, have taken the decision to focus on Premiership survival.

That means seven of their eight players who featured for England in the World Cup final sit out their Pool 4 opener at Racing 92.

Owen Farrell, Maro Itoje, Billy and Mako Vunipola, Jamie George, George Kruis and new signing Elliot Daly are omitted from the matchday 23.

Only scrum-half Ben Spencer, who played four minutes off the bench in the defeat by South Africa in Japan, starts.

Saracens are priced at 3/1 to win a fourth European title in five years behind favourites Leinster. That price is likely to drift now their selection priority is known.

Alex Lozowski, who does start, is confident they will soon be winning trophies again.

"As a player you want to be competing at the top end of competitions.

"With what has happened and the punishment that has been handed down, it looks like it might be difficult this season, but I think Saracens will win championships again.

"Maybe not this season, but we will win championships again and I want to be part of that and we all want to be a part of that.

"The people at the club are too good and care too much and work too hard every day for this to affect us going forward in the long run.

"Whatever happens this season will happen, but as I've said, looking to the future I think there is lots to be positive about."
