Sara Bareilles to star in Waitress on the West End in 2020: How to get tickets

Sara Bareilles will make her West End debut as she takes the lead role in Waitress next year.

The Grammy Award-winning artist, who wrote the lyrics and music for the hugely popular musical, had previously played the part of Jenna on Broadway in 2017.

She will be reunited on stage in London with Gavin Creel, who appeared alongside her in the New York performances. He will reprise the role of Dr Pomatter.

The duo are set to star in the play from January 27 to March 7 in a limited six-week run at the Adelphi Theatre.

Bareilles, who first rose to fame with her international hit single Love Song in 2007, was the creative force behind the theatre adaptation of a film of the same name.

It earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Original Score in 2016, and led to the musical opening in London’s West End earlier this year.

Waitress follows the story of Jenna, a waitress and pie-maker stuck in a loveless marriage who later falls for her gynaecologist.

The Standard gave the play four stars when it opened back in March, describing it as “a satisfying mixture of whimsy, warmth and sadness”, adding: “Sara Bareilles has crafted a propulsive score and lyrics packed with poppy nostalgia”. Read the full review here.

In February, Bareilles spoke to the Standard about the prospect of a Waitress production on the West End, her time on Broadway, American politics and more. Check it out here.
