Saquon Barkley honored to be named a Giants captain: ‘It means everything’

When the New York Giants draft Saquon Barkley second overall in last year’s draft, they knew were getting a heck of a player, person, and teammate.

On Monday, the Giants named Barkley a team captain following his phenomenal rookie year. He joins Eli Manning and Nate Solder as the captains of the offense; both Manning and Solder were captains in 2018.

Barkley being named a captain is surprising considering he is going into just his second year in the league. The surprise is compounded by the fact that the now former Giant, Odell Beckham Jr,. was never voted a team captain in his five years with Big Blue.

On Thursday, Barkley talked about the honor of being captain of the Giants.

Barkley has certainly become not only the Giants’ best player, but also one of their best motivators and team leaders which likely led to the announcement of his captaincy.

Barkley is considered the face of the franchise already with Eli Manning at the tail end of his career and Odell Beckham Jr. no longer with the team. Barkley is a role model to many and is one of the best players not only on the field, but off it as well.

The Giants’ success will rely heavily on Barkley this year. The honor of being captain is obviously not something he will take lightly and most would agree that the achievement is well deserved.
