Sapporo to tell IOC of plan to bid for 2030 Winter Games, not 2026

Sapporo will tell the International Olympic Committee that the city will bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, not the 2026 Games as initially planned, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.

Takatoshi Machida, a deputy mayor of the city, is scheduled to meet IOC President Thomas Bach on Monday at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he will inform Bach of the change.

According to senior city government officials, Machida will also tell Bach that the city will have no problems hosting the Games, following a recent powerful earthquake that caused wide-scale blackouts in the region and soil liquefaction in part of Sapporo.

Japanese Olympic Committee President Tsunekazu Takeda will accompany Machida on the trip.

It will be the first time that a senior city government official will talk to the IOC about the change in the city's bid for the Games.
