SAPPORO -- A snow removing tram, dubbed the sasara densha, made its first run of the winter in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Equipped with sasara brushes made from finely split bamboo, the tram departed from its operator's facility at 5 a.m. Snow flurried through the air as the remover cleared a 5-centimeter accumulation of it from its tracks.
According to the Sapporo Transportation Service Promotion Corp., the tram began operations a month later than usual, and this season marks the latest start date since records became available in 1980.
