Saoirse Ronan stuns in fabulous gown at Golden Globe awards in Los Angeles

Saoirse Ronan shone bright at the Golden Globes with a fabulous gown as she joined a host of stars at the ceremony.

The Carlow star was up for Best Actress for her role in Little Women, but did not scoop an award.

And her stunning display on screen was almost matched by her eye-catching dress on Sunday night, as she went braless and added height with a pair of strappy golden heels.

The 25-year-old showed off her figure in the shimmering backless gown with a deep thigh slit at the awards in Los Angeles.

However, she lost out to favourite Renee Zellweger for her turn as Judy Garland in Judy for the award.

After the nominations were announced, Ronan credited Little Women director Greta Gerwig in a statement to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

She said: “Getting to play Jo March, one of the most inspiring characters in literature, still today, has been an honour. I am eternally grateful to Greta Gerwig for her guidance and partnership, and for her fierce perseverance that brought this incredible cast together and created an environment for us to become a real family and tell this very special story.

“My performance in this film belongs to Greta as much as it does myself and I share this recognition completely with her.”

The biggest winner of the night was Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood, which took home three awards including Best Comedy, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt.

Sam Mendes’ 1917, a drama set during the First World War, was the surprise winner of Best Drama, beating hotly-tipped The Irishman.

Joaquin Phoenix landed the coveted Best Actor award for his titular role in Joker while Taron Egerton snuck past Eddie Murphy and Leonardo DiCaprio to take Best Actor In A Comedy Or Musical for Elton John biopic Rocketman.
