Saoirse Ronan "breaks" Timothee Chalamet's heart in Greta Gerwig's Little Women

Two of Hollywood's brightest young talents are about to be reunited once more on-screen.

Lady Bird stars Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet are set to star opposite each other in the second directorial feature from Greta Gerwig, an adaptation of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.

Ronan will star as the headstrong Jo March, while Chalamet will star alongside her as the March sisters' next-door neighbour, Theodore "Laurie" Laurence.

Ronan told Vanity Fair in their new first-look feature: "I loved that in Lady Bird, he was the one that broke my heart, but I got to break his heart in Little Women."

Gerwig said of casting Ronan once more: "I’m so blessed to work with [Saoirse] twice. She’s such a filmmaker as an actor. She’s like a barometer of … that truth that rings true."

Also starring in the film is Emma Watson, who portrays the steadfast and responsible oldest sister Meg March.

On Watson's role, Gerwig added: "Meg, like so many people, just has an irrepressible desire to fit in with the fancy girls that she’s so different from."

Fighting With My Family star Florence Pugh portrays the ambitious youngest sister Amy March, while Sharp Objects actress Eliza Scanlen is the saintly Beth March.

Oscar-winner Meryl Streep will appear in the film as Aunt March, while Golden Globe-winner Laura Dern takes on the role of the March sisters' beloved mother, Marmee.

The film also stars James Norton and Louis Garrell.

Little Women is released in UK cinemas on January 17, 2019.
