Santiago Munoz breaks silence after Newcastle move as he opens up on 'dream' and sends message

Santiago Munoz has revealed that he will use the film Goal! as 'source of motivation' after completing his 'dream' deadline day move to Newcastle United.

The 19-year-old has joined Newcastle from Mexican side Santos Laguna on loan initially after catching the eye of Steve Nickson, the club's head of recruitment.

Munoz will go straight into Newcastle's academy set-up and the Magpies will have the option of making the 18-month move permanent if he impresses.

While Munoz only made his senior debut for Santos Laguna last year, the forward has already represented Mexico at under-17 and under-23 level.

Newcastle have made a number of academy signings this summer but this deal has made headlines across the world given how Munoz's name is remarkably similar to the lead character in Goal!, who also hailed from Mexico.

It was Santiago Munez, of course, who took Tyneside by storm on the big screen back in 2005 after impressing on trial but Munoz wants to write his own story at the club.

“It’s a dream that I’ve had since I was little,” he told the Athletic. “Just like one of my dreams was to come to Santos and debut in the first division. But [going to Europe] is also a dream that I’ve had since I was kid, a dream that I want to fulfil.

“I’ve known about the links to the movie, but that’s something that’s peripheral to what I want to accomplish. It’ll be another source of motivation, though.”
