Santi Cazorla to Al-Sadd: Former Arsenal midfielder leaves Villarreal to join Xavi

Former Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla has linked up with former Spain team-mate Xavi at Al-Sadd after playing his last game for Villarreal on Sunday.

The 35-year-old has spent the last two seasons back at the club where he started his career following an injury nightmare at the end of his time in north London.

Cazorla, who scored 22 goals in 86 appearances in his second spell at Villarreal, was given a guard of honour and hoisted into the air by team-mates after Sunday's 4-0 win over Eibar.

"We have reached an agreement with Santi Cazorla," Al-Sadd said on Twitter.

"He will reach Doha soon to complete the formalities and join the team. Welcome to Al-Sadd, Santi!"

The popular midfielder was part of Spain's squad, alongside Xavi, as La Roja won Euro 2008 and Euro 2012.

Cazorla has been linked with a possible coaching role at Arsenal, but has decided to continue playing for the time being.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says he is yet to hold talks with Cazorla about a coaching role, but has refused to rule out the Spaniard returning one day.

Xavi recently renewed his contract at Al-Sadd for one more season, up until the end of the 2020-21 campaign.
