Santi Cazorla drops biggest hint yet about future Arsenal role amid talk of Mikel Arteta reunion

Santi Cazorla has played down speculation that he could take up a coaching role when he retires.

Cazorla is currently playing for Villarreal, where he started his career in 2003, but the Spaniard spent six successful seasons at Arsenal.

The 35-year-old is a popular figure in north London after winning two FA Cups and making 180 appearances in total for the Gunners.

There were reports that the midfielder could return to north London when he hangs up his boots to join Mikel Arteta's backroom team.

But Cazorla says he wants to remain focused on the remainder of his playing career in La Liga.

"I have already made my decision, but right now is not the time to say anything," he told Cadena Ser, when asked about his future.

"I have an idea of what I want, but in due course I will reveal what I’ve decided. Now is not the time because we have to be focused on competing.

"[The season being postponed] has helped me think, listen to my body, but I do not want to pre-empt you or to speculate too much."

When asked about whether he could extend his playing career, Cazorla added: "I don’t know, I have an idea but when the time comes I will communicate it and give the explanations. Now we have to be focused."

Despite talk of a potential link-up with former teammate Arteta as part of Arsenal's coaching team, Cazorla admitted he would prefer to take a role upstairs.

"I want to remain linked to football. I could be a coach, but I see myself more in a sporting director role."

football.london  had reported earlier this season that Arsenal were exploring the prospect of bringing Cazorla back to the Emirates in some capacity, in order to say a proper farewell to the supporters.
