NASU, Tochigi -- About 100 people dressed up as Santa Claus to ski and snowboard at Mt. Jeans in Nasu, Tochigi Prefecture, for an annual Christmas event.

The ski resort in the town's Oshima district offered free lift tickets to anyone who showed up in a Santa costume Saturday.

"I had fun seeing all the different Santas. It felt good to ski for the first time in a year," a girl in the third grade of elementary school from Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo, who participated for the first time, said with a smile.

About 600 meters of beginner-level runs were open at the resort as of Sunday. The snowpack of about 30 centimeters is about average and all runs are expected to be open around early January.
