Santander to close two Glasgow branches as part of UK-wide shake up after Covid crisis

Santander has announced today it will close 111 branches across the UK, including Glasgow's Sauchiehall Street and Kilmarnock Road branches.

The Spanish lender cited changes in customer behaviour and a shift to online banking since the start of the covid crisis for its decision.

While branch transactions fell by 50 per cent in 2020, mobile and online transactions have grown by 20 per cent. A third of overall transactions are digital.

The Sauchiehall Street branch will close on June 24, while the Kilmarnock Road branch will close on July 8.

While all 111 branches are to close by August 2021, bosses insisted the majority of those affected are less than three miles from another Santander branch.

A network of 452 branches will remain opening following the proposed changes, and all current and business account holders will be able to access their bank at 11,000 Post Offices.

Bosses added staff will contact potentially vulnerable customers by phone to provide individual support in the next five months.

A dedicated phone number is available to provide customers with help and information on the closures (0800 085 0879).

Santander also revealed it is consolidating office sites into six main locations, one of which being in Glasgow, and Milton Keynes is set to become its new corporate head office this year.

Around 5,000 staff based at closing or consolidating sites will be offered new working arrangements combining working from home with access to local collaboration spaces as it pushes through flexible working.

Adam Bishop at Santander, said: "Branch usage by customers has fallen considerably over recent years so we have made the difficult decision to consolidate our presence in areas where we have multiple branches relatively close together. The majority of the closing branches are within three miles of another branch and the furthest is five miles away.

"We will provide every support to customers of closing branches to find alternative ways to bank with us that best suit their individual needs. We are also working alongside our unions to support colleagues through these changes and to find alternative roles for those impacted wherever possible. We continue to believe that branches have an important role to play and we expect the size of our network to remain stable for the foreseeable future.

"We are committed to supporting our customers and responding to changes in the way customers want to access services."
