SantaLAD is back: West Lothian mechanic who turned car into neon sleigh spotted in Edinburgh

A West Lothian mechanic who has turned his car into a brightly lit sleigh has been spotted in Edinburgh, a year after his appearance on Lothian Road caused him to go viral on Twitter.

He was snapped near The Mound in Edinburgh city centre by local businesswoman Eileen Inglis with his 'sleigh' piled high with presents on his way to the Sick Kids hospital.

Last year, another Twitter user him Santa on Lothian Road and couldn't believe her eyes.

She tweeted: ''There’s a guy who’s actual turned his car inty a light up sleigh n drivin about Edinburgh wi an elf am no jokin.''

The tweet went viral and the mechanic was dubbed SantaLAD, with the post receiving over three thousand likes and over 500 retweets.

The sleigh belongs to The Garage in Whitburn and the annual tradition of taking it to the Sick Kids hospital began in 2015 as ''a way to say thanks to our customers'' owner, Ian Robertson, told Edinburgh Live.

In three years this special sleigh - which is actually a converted Suzuki Vitara (with insurance and MOT) - has ''exploded'' in popularity.

Ian told us: ''Young kids believe its Santa. Everywhere we go people like it. There wasn't a set of traffic lights that people weren't taking photos."

The car/sleigh cost around £1,000 to build - which was used to pay for ''wood, paint, decorations and lights'' for the fun project.
