Santa to deliver gifts to Lanarkshire kids this weekend as Christmas convoy set to take place

Santa is arriving on his sleigh this weekend as thousands of Lanarkshire kids are set to receive a free gift.

Volunteers from the Bothwell and Uddingston Community Action Group will take their Christmas Convoy to the streets again on Saturday and Sunday, December 18 and 19.

The parade sees Santa lead the convoy with his sleigh on top of a pick-up truck, with between 50 and 80 vehicles expected to follow behind.

The event was a huge success last year despite much tighter Covid restrictions, and up to 3000 people turned out to see Santa travel through the G71 postal area.

Organiser Allan Stewart, who runs the Bothwell and Uddingston Community Action forum page on Facebook can't wait to get out and spread the festive cheer again this year.

He told Lanarkshire Live : "We're expecting another good turn out this year to see Santa and his elves go round the streets for all the local children.

Volunteers were thanked for their efforts in running the event last year (Drone Scotland)

"They'll be giving out selection boxes on the streets of Uddingston, Bothwell, Birkenshaw and Viewpark so it will be nice to do that for everyone again this year.

"We want to try and make things as normal as possible for the kids during these times so hopefully we'll be able to put a few smiles on some faces.

"Anybody is welcome to join the convoy, in the past we've had fire engines and last year there was the Lewis Hamilton monster truck as well as some motorbikes which joined in.

"We will be meeting at Toolstop at the Bothwell Park Industrial Estate at 3.45pm on Saturday so vehicles wishing to take part can meet us there."

Allan also helped the community group organise previous Easter and Halloween convoys. And this year, there will also be a chance for locals to get involved in helping provide a Christmas dinner for those in need in the community.

Donations of selection boxes are still being collected this week leading up to the event.

Drop off points for these are at Wylie and Lochhead Funeralcare on Main Street in Uddingston; and Jollytots and Cookies on Old Mill Road, Uddingston.

Children are asked not to cross the road during the convoy and Santa will give out presents from the left hand side of his sleigh.

The parade will leave from Toolstop in Bothwell Park Industrial Estate at 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Toolstop were happy to get involved in the parade, and you can find out more about their activity here.

You can also get involved in the Christmas dinner donations for the community's vulnerable via the Bothwell and Uddingston Community Action Group.
