When jingle bells are just too much, Santa shows sensitive side

HE knows when you are sleeping. He knows when you're awake. He knows when you've been overwhelmed - so now Santa has raised the stakes.

He is offering "sensitive" sessions for those who struggle with all the lights, the noise, and the throngs of people that tend to come with Christmas.

Archie Eadie, of Lake Macquarie, adores the countdown to Christmas. It tends to start right after his birthday in April.

"Archie loves, and hates, Christmas," his mother, Cindy Eadie said.

"He talks about it constantly. He loves it. He loves the presents. But when Christmas time arrives, he gets so overstimulated by it."

Mrs Eadie said Archie had some complex medical issues, including "level three" autism and severe anxiety.

She said he was highly sensitive to light and sound.

"Anything loud and bright, he just can't process," she said. "He can't filter out white noise like we can. So when we walk into a shopping centre, we might notice five things, but Archie will notice 150 things, and he can't process all of that. He gets overwhelmed and melts down.

"He might scream, he might yell, he might lash out. We can't take him to shopping centres because he gets so overstimulated, even by all the people, and the movement."

The family has always tried to get a photo with Santa each year - accepting the fact the whole experience was "going to be horrible".

But this year, it wasn't.

"That is what was so good about the Sensitive Santa session at Westfield," Mrs Eadie said. "Everything was closed, everything was quiet, he could walk around the area where Santa was, as he wanted to.

"He had control over the situation. It was really good. It's the best he has ever been with Santa. Normally he won't let Santa touch him, but he actually gave Santa a hug this year. That was massive.

"He is an amazing kid. He has come a long, long way. He is a great kid, and he has certainly made us better people."
