Santa Monica house with designer Cedrick Gibbons, actress Dolores del Rio history sells

Dec. 10--A Santa Monica house designed by noteworthy Hollywood art director Cedrick Gibbons has sold for $3.569 million.

Listed for sale in September at $3.685 million, the Southern Colonial was built in 1933 while Gibbons was married to actress Dolores del Rio. In more recent years the house changed hands for $2.925 million in 2006, $2.2 million in 2004 and $404,500 in 1981.

The two-story house sits behind gates and hedges in the Santa Monica Canyon area.

Living, dining and family rooms, an attached gym/office, four bedrooms and four bathrooms are within the 3,328 square feet of interiors. Bedroom balconies and a covered patio extend the living space outdoors.

Gibbons, who died in 1960 at 67, was a founding member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He oversaw the design of the Oscar statue and won 11 Academy Awards for art direction.

Tami Pardee and Justin Alexander of Pardee Properties were the listing agents. Frank Langen of Deasy Penner Partners represented the buyer.
