Santa Clarita shooting: One dead and four injured after shooting at southern California high school

One person has died and four have been injured in a shooting at a southern California high school.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said officers were called to Saugus High School in the city of Santa Clarita.

Police said the suspect was initially at large but later said he was taken into custody and was being treated for injuries.

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital tweeted that it had received two patients in a critical condition and said that three more were en route.

It later said that one female victim in the shooting has died.

The school was placed on lockdown as emergency services flooded the scene on Thursday morning.

School district spokesman Dave Caldwell said all campus lockdowns in the district have been lifted except for Saugus High.

Video from local NBC television showed a line of students walking away from the school and a row of police and fire department vehicles parked out front.

KTLA video, broadcast on CNN, showed one woman being loaded into an ambulance.

"Several injured. LASD resources on site and searching for suspect," Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Undersheriff Tim Murakami said in a post on Twitter.

"Will be locking down area schools. Advise residents to shelter in place and report any suspicious activity."
