Santa brings festive magic to Lanarkshire shopping centre

EK, East Kilbride was sparkling at the weekend as Santa flew in to the shopping and leisure centre for the festive season.

Children arrived early in the day to catch a glimpse of that famous red suit as Santa and his elves brought some festive magic to the centre and kick-started the Christmas celebrations.

First in the queue for a selfie were competition winners Brianna, 11, and Shae Kennedy, 10, from Rutherglen.

Shae told Lanarkshire Live : “I was really looking forward to seeing Santa and was very excited waiting for him to arrive.

"He was lovely and listened very carefully when I told him what I would like for Christmas.

"We got some great pictures with him too.”

Santa and his elves will be welcoming all the good boys and girls of EK to his grotto in Centre West for a selfie each weekend before Christmas and in the run up to the big day from December 22 to 24.

There will be no charge for a Santa selfie but visitors are encouraged to make a donation to EK charity Kilbryde Hospice at the grotto.

Younger visitors can also look forward to some fab free festive arts and crafts sessions in the centre on each weekend before Christmas, while there will be Christmas music courtesy of various choirs throughout the festive period.

Claire-Louise Cavin from EK, East Kilbride, said: “It is great to welcome Santa back to EK.

"It has been challenging for everyone over the past two years and it was lovely to see so many smiling faces as he waved to all the youngsters.

"We have lots planned over the coming few weeks and look forward to welcoming visitors to a very festive EK, East Kilbride.”

In addition to the Kilbryde Hospice donations, EK, East Kilbride will also be working closely with EK charity Share Alike and a number of other EK organisations to support the Christmas Kindness campaign.

There will be a special Christmas Kindness tree at the grotto, where shoppers can pick up a tag, buy an appropriate gift and drop it off at the Share Alike unit located at Righead Gate, opposite the back entrance of M&S – before Sunday, December 19.

To find out more about the campaign, which will ensure the most vulnerable members of the community receive a gift this Christmas, visit its Facebook page.
