More than 300,000 people have lined the streets of Adelaide to watch the annual Christmas pageant.

More than 171 colourful floats, bands, dancers and clowns were involved in the parade through the city.

Some people were have been lining up since the early hours of the morning, all to get a glance of Father Christmas.

Grandmother Tracy Henderson arrived at 5:00am to get a good spot, and said it was the first time her family had seen the Christmas pageant.

"We were really surprised a few of the people got here at midnight and some at 3:30am, so we thought 'oh we will be right here in plenty of time'," she said.

"But no, it was absolutely packed [and] the atmosphere was fabulous."
