The government has denied asking people to wear yellow on Monday, the first day after the mourning period of King Bhumibol Adulyadej officially ended.
Government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd was responding to reports the Prachuap Khiri Khan governor had asked people to wear yellow on that day. Yellow is believed to be the colour of the late king, who was born on Monday.
“I haven’t heard about it. As of now, there has been no such instruction to provincial governors,” Lt Gen Sansern said.
The government does not force people to wear any colour. “It's really up to them,” he added.
The cabinet earlier set Sunday as the last day of mourning for the beloved monarch who passed away on Oct 13 last year.
While the order applies to government officials, a large number of the public have voluntarily worn black over the past year.
The instruction is to wear normal colours as appropriate but no mourning pins should be used starting Monday.
