Sandyford Business District calling on Government to extend waiver of commercial rates to end of year

Ireland's largest improvement district is calling on the Government to extend the three-month waiver of commercial rates to the end of this year.

The Sandyford Business District has also asked them to provide local government with funding for any shortfall in revenues.

Commercial rates were waived for a three month period from March 27 for businesses that were forced to close due to public health requirements.

CEO of Sandyford Business District, Conor Battigan said: “While we absolutely welcome some of the measures introduced by Government over the Covid-19 pandemic we now feel more needs to be done for businesses.

"As many of them reopen, they are faced with increasing overheads to comply with social distancing measures and a decrease in store capacity and turnover. For that reason, now is not the right time to pile extra costs on them.

“An extension of the commercial rates waiver is right and appropriate in circumstances where businesses are trying to ensure the viability of their operations and keep staff employed.

"While we fully understand local rates are crucial for the funding of local government we believe Government should make available an emergency fund to cover the loss of revenue to local authorities should the waiver be extended.

“We must put in place the correct short-term measures to guide businesses through this crisis and prioritise the overhaul of archaic systems that do nothing but hinder badly needed business growth."
