Sandy Alderson is returning to where it all began.
Just a couple of days after announcing he is now cancer-free, Alderson got some more good news Tuesday as the A's announced they've hired Alderson as Senior Advisor to Baseball Operations.
"I am thrilled to welcome Sandy as a Senior Advisor to Baseball Operations," A's Executive Vice President Billy Beane said. "His mentorship and friendship have been invaluable to me over the course of my career, and I look forward to the expertise and perspective he will add at every level of the organization. David and I couldn't be more excited to bring him back to Oakland."
Alderson's MLB career began with the A's in 1981 when he joined the club as general counsel and spanned 17 seasons as he served a number of roles. He served as general manager through 1997 and put together an impressive roster that went on a dominant run from 1988-90, winning three consecutive American League pennants and a World Series title in 1989.
Alderson, 71, spent the previous eight seasons as general manager of the New York Mets, who compiled a 628-668 record under his watch.
"I am really excited to return to the A's and the Bay Area," Alderson said. "I look forward to being as helpful as I can to Billy, David, and the rest of the Baseball Operations staff."
