Sandwi accidentally serve cheese toasty without cheese and not toasted

An unhappy snacker paid almost £4 for a cheese toastie which came neither toasted nor containing cheese. The disappointed diner uploaded a snap of their sandwich to Reddit forum r/Bristol, with the caption “tastes like butter alone”.

The offending item came from Sandwi, a sandwich shop near Bristol Temple Meads, and reportedly cost £3.95. The post about it attracted almost 200 responses from fellow Reddit users – many of whom jumped to the defence of the independent eatery.

InspectorOk2533, who shared the sorry-looking sandwich, described the toastie as just “a little brown” on top, containing just seven or eight “flecks” of melted cheese. “Wow,” wrote user dirtymikeesq, “that’s neither cheesy or toasty.”

But the cheated cheese fan apparently managed to see the funny side. “I do feel a bit of a tool buying a sarnie from a place called Sandwi and not expecting it to be an incomplete sandwich,” they wrote.

Between dairy-based puns about asking for a “briefund” and insisting that staff make their sandwiches more “caerphilly”, several users chimed up in support of the venue. “Based on my experience with them, they're normally pretty top notch with their food,” wrote Intrepid-Dig-1855. “I ate the best toastie and cake here.”

Informal-Pear-5272 concurred. “Usually their food absolutely rocks,” they wrote, adding that “this was deffo an accident.” Other users praised the cafe’s sausage rolls as the best they had ever had. The venue has scored over 4 out of 5 from 108 Google reviews, with Restaurant Guru putting them in the top quarter of all the cafes in Bristol.

A spokesperson for Sandwi said: “I have passed this on to the shop, but I think it was just a mistake and we are really sorry for that. It’s not something that happens often.” They also offered the disgruntled diner a gift voucher, if they would like to get in touch and identify themselves.
