Sands of time running out as Stockton beach report deadline looms

Stockton residents protest.

IN less than two weeks residents will know what City of Newcastle proposes as long-term solutions to address erosion on Stockton beach.

Pressure has been mounting on City of Newcastle to complete Stockton's Coastal Management Program (CMP) after Local Government Minister Shelley Hancock brought the deadline forward six months to June 30.

It's understood not all technical reports will be completed before the deadline, meaning the plan is being finalised without full understanding of exactly what is going on.

As part of a taskforce established by Deputy Premier John Barilaro, separate to the CMP, the Department of Resources and Geoscience has been working to identify possible offshore sand sources to address the erosion.

"There's some good work which has been done by the department over the years, and they hope that by the end of the month they'll have a very good idea as to where the best locations might be for investigation as source sand that would potentially be suitable for replenishment of Stockton beach," a spokesman for Mr Barilaro said.

Offshore sand extraction is illegal in NSW without a permit.
