Sandringham royal estate has already put up its mile-long Christmas lights trail

The festive lights are already twinkling above one royal estate this year, before November is half way through.

Sandringham royal estate has opened its Christmas lights display to the public, a month and a half ahead of the big day.

The mile-long Winter Light Trail through the Royal Parkland in Norfolk has already returned for its third year, having proved to be a big hit with punters.

Many time slots for the Luminate event have been completely sold out, including for this Saturday, suggesting many people are ready to get into the Christmas spirit.

The light show will run until December 18 (PA)

The light trail takes between 60 and 90 minutes to complete and will run until December 18 on the iconic royal estate.

Ambient music will play in the background as visitors wander along a lit-up trail that is a mile long, with fire pits roaring for the toasting of marshmallows.

Those who want to come and bask in the seasonal glow need to pay £42 for a couple, or £65 for a family of four.

As well as enjoying the lights, visitors can explore the ground of the Queen's former Christmas retreat.

Following her death in September, Sandringham has become one of the royal residences of her son, King Charles III.

Those bringing young Father Christmas fans should know that Santa won't be on site for guests to meet.

However, a vintage funfair with a helter skelter, flying chairs, a carousel and a ferris wheel will be.

There are also Luminate events being held at other venues across the UK including Margam Country Park in Wales, Coombe Abbey in Coventry and Hardwick Hall in Chesterfield.

The Luminate website reads: "As darkness descends, join us on our enchanting journey, as we weave a captivating light trail through the Royal Parkland at Sandringham. Immerse yourself in our mesmerising mile long trail, with stunning lighting elements and fabulous light play, all set to ambient music.

"A timeless experience to be enjoyed by all, young and old alike."
