Sanditon finale leaves viewers raging over 'depressing and un-Austen' ending

Sanditon viewers were raging tonight as they branded the ITV drama's finale "depressing" and deemed it "un-Austen".

Author Jane Austen, whose unfinished book by the same name was adapted by ITV for the drama, is renowned for her happy endings.

Charlotte and Sidney's spark finally seemed as though it was going to burn into a relationship as they pair shared a kiss.

However things went south when Sidney rushed to London to save Sanditon, meaning that he would have to marry his rich old flame in order to do so.

And fans were fuming, branding the ending "not very Austen".

While another commented: "Please don’t leave it like that Mr Parker!!!! I’m in bits. #Sanditon my Sunday’s will not the same."
