Sanditon 2: Bristol locations you'll recognise in new series of Jane Austen drama

It was a joyous day for fans of ITV period drama Sanditon when it was announced the show, which had been cancelled in 2019, had been renewed for a further two seasons.

Following the #SaveSanditon campaign, BritBox picked up the series - based on an unfinished manuscript by Jane Austen - and filming for the second and third installments commenced this summer.

And what better place to shoot than in our very own city, which has been the location of choice for numerous big-time directors this year.

The series follows Charlotte Heywood, a “spirited and impulsive” woman who moves from her rural home to Sanditon, a fishing village attempting to reinvent itself as a seaside resort, as IMDb explains.

There is no official air date for season two yet, but BritBox says it will be arriving in 2022.

Season one of the show was filmed mainly in Somerset, and while the county - and parts of the Cotswolds - feature in the new season, filming took place largely in the Bristol region.

A convention for the show - called Sandicon - is taking place this month and will see fans visit the show's most prominent shooting locations. As the Sandicon website explains, the convention will stop at the city of Bristol, a “bustling TV and film production hub.”

And eager-eyed fans of the show have been following the actors movements closely on social media.

Maxim Ays, who plays Captain William Carter, was spotted outside the Christmas Steps just a few weeks ago.

In fact, the whole crew were pictured enjoying a night out in Bristol city centre near the waterfront in another snap.

Bristol Live understands a chunk of filming took place at Filton Airfield, where actor Kris Marshall posed for a snap enjoying a cheeky 99.

The set for the show can also be seen in a birds eye view shot from Bristol’s Fiesta Fortnight, as pointed out by @bristol_filming on Twitter.

Production signs were also pointing in the direction of the Brabazon Hangars in July of this year.

Meanwhile the Georgian House Museum and John Wesley’s New Room which feature in the first series could pop up in seasons two and three.

Dyrham Park in Bath and Frampton Court in Gloucester are also prominent shooting locations for season two.
