Local authorities began floating the ashes of sandalwood flowers for the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej in local waterways on Friday morning, following his cremation on Thursday night.

In the Northeast, a receptacle and bags containing ashes of sandalwood flowers for the late king were taken to Wat Klang in Kalasin’s Muang district for a merit making ceremony.

Local officials and residents took part in the ceremony, chaired by provincial governor Kraisorn Kongchalad.

After the merit making, the ashes of the cremation flowers were floated on the Pao River at Wat Chai Mongkol in Kamalasai district.

In Nakhon Ratchasima, ashes of sandalwood flowers for King Bhumibol were taken from a replica of the royal crematorium in front of the city hall for a merit-making ceremony, led by provincial governor Wichian Chantaranothai

The flower ashes were later floated on the Lam Takong River at Wat Sala Loi in Muang district.

Also in the same district, 2nd Army Region commander Lt Gen Tharakorn Thamwinthorn led his officers in white uniforms to parade in formation as the number nine in Thai in a last show of respect for the late king, Rama IX, at Suranaree military camp. There was also a smaller black ribbon of mourning.

They also sang the royal anthem and observed 89 (the age of the late King) seconds of silence, sending King Bhumibol on his journey to heaven.
