Sanctions likely after mass brawl in Laois GAA clash

Sanctions will likely follow a referee’s report into a mass brawl following a GAA match last weekend.

Ugly scenes broke out after the final whistle in the game between Arles-Killeen and Killeshin on Saturday evening in O’Moore Park, Co Laois.

A one-minute video clip filmed from the stand and circulated widely on social media captured some of the melee.

The fight featured players, supporters and officials, with sanctions likely to be handed down by Laois GAA chiefs.

It appears to show a spectator hitting out at a non-player from behind the perimeter fence.

He is then dragged onto the pitch as the row escalates further and others join the commotion.

Punches were thrown and stewards were forced to intervene in the main brawl as a brief second scuffle involving players breaks off to another part of the pitch.

A spokesperson for Laois GAA told the Irish Mirror that a referee’s report will be discussed by the county board.

Paul Dargan said: “There’s no statement at the minute.

“There’s meetings due to take place, any county board has the same issues.

“The report is sent in from the referee and it goes to the Competitions Control Committee, so it goes down for discussion with the county board.”

Local media reported that a Laois GAA sanctioned video of the game could also be used for disciplinary purposes.

Laois Today said there was also skirmishes in two of the other games in the Laois SFC involving Ballylinan and Clonaslee-St Manman’s on Thursday night and between Emo and The Heath on Saturday.

Paul McDonald, chair of Arles-Killeen, said any report will be complied with in full.

Liam Dowling, chair of Killeshin, said he wouldn’t be making a comment until the report comes back from the county board.

Killeshin won the local derby 1-17 to 0-15 after extra time to progress in the Laois Senior Football Championship.
