Why Northern Colorado Will Win
The San Jose State defense is going to need a whole lot of work after needing a whole lot of work last season.
For all of the Spartans’ problems last season, controlling the clock turned into one of the biggest issues – UNC has to be able to handle the tempo from the start.
It was a disaster of a SJSU D that allowed 500 yards per game, and even though it gets back four of its top five tacklers, the secondary is going to be an early concern and the front line has to prove it can stop someone.
The Northern Colorado offense might be missing some key parts from its passing game, but former Wyoming Cowboy Milo Hall is a good back who needs to be fed the ball early and often against what should be a porous Spartan run defense.
Why San Jose State Will Win
If the San Jose State defensive front was ever going to do much in the backfield, this would be the game.
The UNC Bears are tuning up behind a line that was among the worst in the FCS last season in pass protection. The Spartans didn’t do much to get to the quarterback last season, but the linebackers have the experience and upside to shoot into the backfield just enough to be a bother.
Offensively, QB Josh Love is back and healthy, the receiving corps is in place to get hot early on, and the veteran offensive front should at least be more consistent.
This is a Northern Colorado team that went 2-9 last season with a punchless attack – it’s not going to take too many early points to take control of this, and the Spartan O should be able to do it.

What’s Going To Happen
San Jose State was stunned by UC Davis in a 44-38 loss to start last season, but it’s not going to blow the FCS game this time around. Northern Colorado is lacking in too many areas offensively, but the defense will be just okay enough to keep this from getting out of hand. If you like the Spartans, enjoy this – they’re likely going to be the underdog in every game the rest of the way.
