SAN JOSE, Calif. _ A standoff Sunday night between police and an armed suspect ended with one of the deadliest shootings in the city's history: five people killed, including the suspect.
Early Monday, San Jose police said they were investigating the case as a quadruple murder and suicide.
Officers responded to multiple calls Sunday around 8:30 p.m. about a shooting on Habbitts Court, off Senter Road near the county fairgrounds.
"When officers arrived on scene, two adults exited the residence suffering from at least one gunshot wound each," said San Jose police spokeswoman Officer Gina Tepoorten.
The victims were evacuated from the shooting scene in the police department's BearCat tactical vehicle. They were taken to a hospital, and one died soon after, Tepoorten said.
As officers surrounded the residence, police were trying to contact the shooter and find out whether more residents were inside, Tepoorten said.
Tactical-team police carrying assault rifles and wearing military-style helmets continued to arrive at the scene in the hours after the initial report. At around 9:30 p.m., a police negotiator hurried past the police cordon on Umbarger Road toward the residence. Shortly after, the department's Tactical Negotiation Unit arrived at the scene.
