July 26--A San Francisco police officer shot a man suspected of crashing a stolen car and attempting to carjack another after leading police on a chase that started at San Francisco International Airport early Sunday, authorities said.
The suspect was shot in the upper torso but is expected to live, said Deputy Rebecca Rosenblatt of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Department, which is handling the investigation. The officer was not injured.
The incident began about 7 a.m., when a police officer assigned to the airport bureau responded to a call about a possible hit-and-run in the area of North McDonnell Road and San Bruno Avenue, police said in a statement. It was later determined that the vehicle involved was stolen.
The suspect smashed the vehicle into a light pole. When the officer arrived on the scene, the suspect ran off and entered the passenger side of another vehicle, which was stopped at a red light on San Bruno Avenue and Highway 101, authorities said.
The officer ordered the suspect and the driver to stop and exit the vehicle, authorities said. At that point, the suspect ran out of the vehicle and onto traffic lanes on the highway.
Another officer approached and ordered the suspect to show his hands, authorities said. The suspect refused and "instead turned on" the officer, who opened fire, police said.
No other details were available about the shooting.
