Troubled former 49ers and Raiders lineman Aldon Smith is being sought by San Francisco police after they said Sunday that he "fled the scene" where officers had responded to a domestic-violence complaint.
"The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries," a Sunday afternoon statement read in part. "The suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival and was identified as professional football player Aldon Smith, a 28-year-old Oakland resident." The statement said officers arrived around 8:30 p.m. Saturday to a residence in the 600 block of Bush Street in San Francisco after receiving the report of a domestic-violence incident.
The Twitter-verse had exploded Sunday morning after a tweet reported that Smith was on the run.
"#BREAKING: Sources telling me Aldon Smith was involved in a domestic violence incident last night/early this morning, and then fled the scene," a tweet from Ted Ramey's Twitter feed @TedRameyMedia read. "More info as I find out."
The report led many on Twitter to comment about the sad news, "if true."
The San Francisco police statement ended by asking Smith to reach out to investigators with the department's special-victims unit at its 24-hour operations center at 415-575-4444. Anyone with information on Smith may also call the number or text-a-tip to TIP411 and begin a text message with "SFPD."
Smith has a lengthy rap sheet. He agreed to plead no-contest to a hit-and-run charge surrounding an Aug. 6, 2015, incident and was sentenced to 20 days in jail. Prosecutors agreed to charges that Smith drove under the influence in that incident. He also was ordered to attend a treatment facility, undergo anger management classes and was forbidden to go to bars.
On April 13, 2014, police arrested Smith on suspicion of making false bomb threats at Los Angeles International Airport, but the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office did not file charges.
Smith turned himself in on Oct. 29, 2013, on three felony counts of possessing illegal assault weapons after a stabbing incident. The charges later were reduced to misdemeanors. Only six weeks before that, Smith crashed a car into a tree in San Jose and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of DUI and possession of marijuana.
His first arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence came on Jan. 27, 2012, in Miami Beach. He qualified for a diversion program for first-time offenders, and prosecutors reduced the charges to reckless driving.
